About Donut County

Donut County dropped on August 28, 2018, as a quirky indie adventure from Ben Esposito. Published by Annapurna Interactive, this title landed on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC, Mac, and both mobile platforms. You play as BK, a raccoon who drives an ever-growing hole in the ground. The premise involves swallowing trash, animals, and eventually people to solve physics-based puzzles while uncovering why your friends are stuck underground. It feels like a weirdly charming story where you break things just to fix them later. The game balances silly humor with genuine narrative moments as you dig deeper into the county's secrets.

Gameplay

You control a hole that grows larger every time it consumes an object. The core loop involves dragging items toward BK to increase the hole's size and then using momentum to smash through obstacles or reach high places. A typical session sees you picking up trash cans, then cars, then entire houses as your suction power scales up. The controls feel smooth on both controllers and touch screens since you simply drag to move the hole. You unlock new areas by solving environmental puzzles that require specific object sizes to navigate. There are no combat sequences, just physics calculations where you drop heavy items from heights to break open paths. The game ends only after you reach the bottom of the world to confront your friends.

What Players Think

Players on PlayPile have given Donut County a solid reception with an IGDB score of 75.8 based on 218 ratings. The community average playtime sits around six hours, reflecting its concise story-driven design. Only 45.9% of the 20 available achievements have been unlocked by the group, suggesting some puzzles might trip people up or they simply skip collectibles. Review snippets often mention the game's short length but praise its emotional payoff. The prevailing mood is lighthearted with moments of genuine sadness as the story progresses. Critics and fans alike note how the simple mechanic evolves into something surprisingly deep without ever becoming repetitive or tedious during those few hours of play.

PlayPile's Take

This title costs just $2.99 at its historical low, making it an easy buy for anyone curious about physics puzzles. The 20 achievements offer some replay value if you want to find every hidden item. Donut County works best for players who enjoy short, narrative experiences with a focus on exploration rather than challenge. It is not for those seeking complex mechanics or hundreds of hours of content. The ending lands with weight that justifies the purchase price. Pick it up when you want a quick story without investing days in gameplay.

Storyline

Raccoons have taken over Donut County with remote-controlled trash-stealing holes. You play as BK, a hole-driving raccoon who swallows up his friends and their homes to earn idiotic prizes. When BK falls into one of his own holes, he’s confronted by his best friend Mira and the residents of Donut County, who are all stuck 999 feet underground… and they demand answers!
