"While it was already something of a relic when it launched on the N64 almost 25 years ago, Doom 64 remains a great example of just how refined a formula the series offers and just how good a job the late Midway did in the shadow of id Software. The lack of local multiplayer support still stings, even after all these years, but with support for motion controls on Switch – something Nightdive has already pulled off to a tee with its Turok ports – and the addition of a new DOOM Eternal-themed level, this is classic retro shooter that deserves a little more love."

Doom 64 EX is a first person shooter that rebuilds the classic Doom 64 experience with modern graphics and engine tweaks. Developed by Samuel Villarreal, it runs on OpenGL and fixes bugs from older versions while keeping the original game’s layout and challenges intact. Players navigate through haunted spaces, battling demons with a mix of revamped weapons like a double bladed chainsaw and a plasma rifle that kicks back on fire. The gameplay loops around finding keys, triggering switches, and surviving traps, but with sharper visuals and smoother controls. The standout here is the Laser, a weapon originally planned for early Doom games but never used. It uses the same ammo as the plasma rifle and gains three upgradeable artifacts that let it fire multiple beams at once. The game’s plot follows a lone marine fighting a resurrected demonic horde on Mars, adding a grim edge to the action. While it’s a niche project, the precision in recreating the original’s feel earned it a dedicated following among series fans.
