About Doom II: Hell on Earth

Doom II: Hell on Earth dropped on September 30, 1994 as the direct sequel to the 1993 original. id Software built this shooter while Imagineer handled publishing for later releases. You play an unnamed space marine returning to a planet overrun by demons after escaping Mars. The story starts with survivors trying to escape Earth only to find their ground spaceport seized. This title brought new enemies and weapons to the formula before landing on PC, Mac, DOS, and even the obscure Tapwave Zodiac. It remains a definitive entry in the first-person shooter genre that defined an era of gaming.

Gameplay

You move through maze-like levels while managing ammo and health packs against waves of monsters. The core loop involves shooting, dodging attacks, and solving minor puzzles to find keys or switches. You get the Super Shotgun here which fires two barrels for massive close-range damage. New foes like the Arch-vile and Mancubus force you to change tactics since they heal others or spit fireballs. Sessions feel frantic as you sprint between cover points while reloading your chaingun or BFG. The game supports single player, multiplayer deathmatches, and cooperative modes where you tackle levels with a friend. Controls feel tight despite the age of the code allowing for precise movement in tight corridors.

What Players Think

The PlayPile community rates this title highly with an IGDB score of 84.9 out of 100 based on 517 ratings. Players describe the vibe as Chaotic, Intense, and Competitive while some find it Cooperative. Average playtime varies but completion rates suggest most people finish all episodes before moving on. Community moods lean heavily toward high-energy action rather than Chill sessions which only received one vote. Reviews often highlight the difficulty spike in later levels compared to the first game. The multiplayer component remains active enough that competitive players still form lobbies years after release. No other site tracks these specific mood votes or completion metrics for this classic title.

PlayPile's Take

This game is worth playing if you want to understand the history of fast-paced shooters. It sells for a reasonable price on modern platforms and offers 30 achievements to chase. The difficulty curve stays steep so expect to die often until you master enemy patterns. You will not find a perfect experience here since the graphics are dated and collision can be finicky. However, the tight combat and level design make up for technical limitations. Buy it if you like shooting demons in narrow hallways rather than open fields.

Storyline

Immediately following the events in Doom, the player once again assumes the role of the unnamed space marine. After defeating the demon invasion of the Mars moon bases and returning from Hell, Doomguy finds that Earth has also been invaded by the demons, who have killed billions of people. The humans who survived the attack have developed a plan to build massive spaceships which will carry the remaining survivors into space. Once the ships are ready, the survivors prepare to evacuate Earth. Unfortunately, Earth's only ground spaceport gets taken over by the demons, who place a flame barrier over it, preventing any ships from leaving.
