Dota is a 1986 action-platformer where you play as a boy racing to rescue his family from an ancient bio-weapon. Navigate four themed zones crawling with monsters and traps, collecting weapons and power-ups to upgrade health and combat options. The game mixes side-scrolling platforming with shoot-'em-up mechanics, requiring precise jumps and timed fire to survive boss encounters. Each zone introduces new hazards and enemy types, pushing players to adapt strategies as they progress. The game's fast-paced combat and resource management stand out, with limited checkpoints forcing careful planning. A planned Family Computer port was scrapped in 1987 but modern PC versions live on through Project EGG. Retro fans praise the tight controls and varied level design, though the difficulty can feel punishing by today's standards. With its mix of exploration and intense boss fights, Dota still holds up as a brisk, old-school challenge.
Dota & his biologist father happen upon an archaic scroll, found by an explorer at the ruins of a lost Tibetan city. At their lab, the father studies this text and uses its secrets to create new life. However, he unknowingly releases the curse of Toruda, a long-deceased ruler of the ancient world who imbued his powers into the scroll. Toruda's desires to revive himself through new life, and take over the world, bring about monsters in the lab & nearby lands. With his family captured by Toruda's bio-weapon and underlings, Dota manages to escape and begin his quest to rescue them. He must travel through 4 zones, each infested with evil creations, so he can become strong enough to defeat 4 boss monsters. Can he reach his family and stop Toruda before it's too late?
