Double Dragon II: The Revenge sharpens the beat-'em-up formula with tighter controls and fresh combat options. Replacing the original’s separate punch/kick buttons are left and right attack inputs that let you throw directional combos or back kicks. New moves like the Hurricane Kick add variety, while four distinct stages, heliport, warehouse, fields, and a boss lair, each pack their own set of baddies and themed bosses. The core loop stays a chaotic but methodical grind through crowds, with co-op support letting two players tackle missions together. The final act flips the script by pitting you against a copy of your own character, a twist that adds tension to the climax. If you and a friend stick it out, you both face your clones in separate fights, raising the stakes for teamwork. Though it dropped in arcades compared to its 1987 predecessor, fans often rate this sequel higher for its refined mechanics and added depth. The original arcade build remains a cornerstone of the genre, with a 4.4/5 average from retro gaming forums.
The arcade version of Double Dragon II: The Revenge begins with Marian, the damsel in distress from the original Double Dragon, being shot to death by the leader of the Black Warriors. Once again, the players assume the role of brothers Billy and Jimmy Lee, who are now tasked with the duty of avenging Marian's death.
