Double Dragon II: The Revenge is a side-scrolling beat ‘em up that pits the Lee brothers against waves of street brawlers and shadowy foes. Playing as Billy or Jimmy, you punch, kick, and combo through levels filled with goons, using environmental objects like chairs and pipes to gain the upper hand. The PC Engine CD version sticks close to the NES original’s structure but stretches stages with more enemies and varied groupings. Co-op multiplayer lets you team up for the chaos, though the action remains tight and fast-paced without feeling overcrowded. This port adds a few key twists. The bulldozer sequence from the arcade version is gone, but a new fight against Willy and an adjusted Shadow Master battle make up for it. Difficulty settings change the outcome, beating Hard mode unlocks a better ending involving Marion. While it lacks some of the arcade’s flair, the PC Engine CD version feels like a refined challenge for fans of the genre. Its mix of familiar beats and small but meaningful changes keeps it engaging for brawlers who miss the classic formula.
