Dr. Franken is a 1992 Game Boy platformer where you play Franky, a creature searching for his missing girlfriend Bitsy in a spooky castle. Each of the seven floors hides pieces of her body and key items needed to rebuild her. You’ll shoot enemies, leap over trapdoors, and dodge falling debris while navigating dark dungeons. Power outlets restore health and lamps light the way but you only have a limited number of continues. Progress is saved via a password system which was standard for handheld games at the time. The controls are tight but the small screen makes timing jumps tricky. What sticks out is the clever use of Game Boy’s hardware for its era. Players often mention how the password system let them pause and resume without a cartridge. Though not graphically intense by today’s standards the castle’s spooky vibe comes through with clever tilework. With just one button for actions the game demands precise timing. It’s a quick but challenging run that still shows up in retro playlists. The password system and puzzle elements keep it feeling fresh for nostalgia runs.
Franky, one of the many creations of Dr Von Frankenbone, has awoken to find his love, Bitsy, has vanished. Discovering the other evil creations of the castle has taken Bitsy and left pieces of her around the castle, Franky must find his way through the many levels and put Bitsy back together. Franky can shoot his way past many of the evil creatures, but you must also dodge falling objects and jump over trapdoors to stay alive. Power outlets can re-charge Franky to full health, while lamps must be used to see through the dark dungeons.
