About

Dragon King: The Fighting Game started life as a low budget experiment before evolving into something much bigger. HAL Laboratory built it for the Nintendo 64 to test out using the analog joystick in new ways. Early drafts focused on generic fighters, but the team soon swapped them out for Nintendo icons to create a better atmosphere. This prototype was meant to kick off a series of fighting games but never fully shipped under that title. Instead, the mechanics and character roster refined into what we now know as Super Smash Bros. The game stands out because it is the direct ancestor of one of the most popular fighting franchises ever made. Masahiro Sakurai shared rare footage from 2022 showing just how the prototype looked before the final product emerged. It plays like a rougher version of the modern smash titles with basic movement and attacks that feel a bit clunky by today standards. Seeing this early state helps explain why the final game has such a distinct physics feel. The raw data suggests it was a crucial stepping stone for the industry rather than just a failed side project.
