Dragon Quest V: Tenkuu no Hanayome is a role-playing game that splits its narrative across three distinct timelines and characters. Players follow the Hero’s journey from childhood to adulthood, weaving through quests that involve turn-based battles, exploration, and a handful of oddball minigames like racing. The story leans into family drama and tragedy early on, with the Hero’s father dying to save his son and a prince, setting off a chain of events that ties slavery, prophecy, and redemption into a large saga. Character interactions and branching decisions shape relationships that carry across decades. The game’s reputation rests on its bold storytelling and emotional weight. It’s known for its complex structure and morally gray moments, like the Hero’s brief turn as a thief. While its programming limitations kept it exclusive to Japan in 1992, fans praise its ambition and the way it subverts typical fantasy tropes. Despite its age, it remains a cornerstone of the series, with a cult following that often cites its narrative risks and payoff.
Dragon Quest V begins with a brief scene of the Hero's birth. Afterwards, the Hero, as a child, and his father, Pankraz travel to meet Sancho, an old friend. The Hero meets Bianca and the two explore the haunted Uptaten Towers, where they obtain a mysterious Golden Orb. The next day, the Hero notices a man in the town who looks similar to him, albeit much older. That man asks the Hero to show him the Golden Orb and, after returning it, asks him to take care of his father Pankraz. The first section of the story ends with Pankraz being killed by Ladja, a mysterious member of the Order of Zugzwang, when he tries to protect his son and Prince Harry. The two children are then taken into slavery.
