Driving Demon is a retro racing game that puts you behind the wheel of a car hurtling down a straight two-lane road. From a top-down view, you steer to dodge oncoming traffic and avoid veering off the road into oil slicks. A small scanner panel onscreen gives a preview of obstacles ahead but timing your moves right is key. The catch is you’ve got to manually shift gears. Miss the right moment and your engine overheats sending you into a crash. What makes Driving Demon stand out is its unforgiving manual transmission mechanic which adds a layer of strategy beyond just steering. With only five crashes allowed before game over every decision matters. Released in 1983 for the Texas Instruments TI-99 it’s a relic of early arcade racing that still tests reflexes and timing. Players appreciate its simplicity and the tension of balancing speed with precision, a throwback to when arcade games meant quick thinking and steady hands.
