About Duke Nukem Forever

Triptych Games finally released this mess in June 2011 after years of development hell. It is a shooter and adventure title where you play as Duke Nukem, who has been on hiatus while the aliens stole Earth's women and drank his beer. You must blast through waves of invaders to save the world and reclaim your franchise chains. The game hit PlayStation 3, PC, Xbox 360, and Mac with both single player and multiplayer modes available. It promises epic ass-kicking with massive weapons and giant explosions. This is a third-person shooter that lets you carry an arsenal of over-the-top guns while dealing with pig cops and shrink rays in a crumbling gambling haven.

Gameplay

You move through levels using standard FPS controls to blast aliens with everything from a chainsaw to a freeze ray. Each session involves running around shooting enemies, solving minor puzzles, and collecting items to upgrade your gear. The game features interactive environments where you can shoot objects or kick things. You face enormous alien bosses in set-piece battles that require specific weapon strategies. Multiplayer modes offer various ways to compete against other players using the same chaotic arsenal. The pacing is fast with constant action sequences. You spend most of your time reloading weapons and dodging laser fire while shouting one-liners at every kill.

What Players Think

The PlayPile community data shows a divided opinion on this title. IGDB ratings sit at 56 out of 100 based on 232 user reviews, indicating a below-average reception overall. Average completion rates hover around 45 percent, suggesting many players quit before finishing the campaign. The average playtime is roughly 8 hours for the main story. Community moods range from nostalgic amusement to frustration over technical issues. Some users praise the humor and weapon variety, while others criticize the clunky controls and long loading times. Review snippets frequently mention the infamous development delays but remain split on whether the final product delivers enough fun to justify the wait.

PlayPile's Take

This game is worth buying only if you want a cheap single-player shooter for 10 dollars or less. It offers over-the-top action with plenty of weapons and multiplayer options. The achievement list includes collecting all secrets and beating the game on hard difficulty. You will find about 35 achievements to track down during your playthrough. Do not expect a masterpiece since the ratings prove otherwise. Skip it if you want tight mechanics or a coherent story. Pick this up for a chaotic afternoon of shooting aliens and laughing at the dialogue. The price point makes the flaws easier to ignore.

Storyline

Did the Alien bastards not learn their lesson the first time? Duke has been on hiatus for some time now, kicking back and franchising himself on the fame he gained from saving Earth from the first invasion. The Aliens have returned to Earth yet again, messing up Duke’s sweet routine of dirty leisure habits. The Alien invaders are stealing Earth’s women, especially the hot ones! And they drank Duke’s beer. This. Won’t. Stand. As Duke battles his way through waves of aliens, the once beautiful gambling haven and Duke Nukem franchise chains are crumbling before his eyes. Time to bring the pain!
