Dungeon Explorer: Warriors of Ancient Arts mixes turn-based combat with gear customization and martial arts flair. You build a character by selecting from dozens of starting classes then upgrade weapons armor and abilities as you progress through dungeons. Each battle lets you switch between active and passive combat styles using over 150 distinct fighting techniques. The Big Bang Arts system lets three players team up in ad hoc multiplayer to combine attacks in real time while solo mode focuses on deep progression trees and loot discovery. This 2007 release stands out for its flexibility letting players blend magic and melee in ways few RPGs allowed at the time. The PSP and DS versions share core mechanics but take advantage of each system’s controls differently. Though not a genre-definer it earned a dedicated following for its sheer variety of combat options and equipment combinations. Released just as handheld gaming peaked it remains a solid pick for strategy fans who enjoy tinkering with builds.
