Dungeon Siege III is an action RPG with fast melee combat and co-op play. Players take on a customizable hero in a world where the once-dominant 10th Legion is nearly gone. The story follows the aftermath of a rebellion that left the kingdom of Ehb fractured. Gameplay blends looting, character progression, and split-screen co-op. Missions range from dungeon clearing to on-foot exploration, with a focus on team tactics and class synergy. Obsidian Entertainment handled development after the series left Gas Powered Games. Square Enix published it following their acquisition of the IP. The game launched in 2011 on PS3, PC, and Xbox 360. While it didn't match the critical success of prior entries, fans note its polished co-op and tight combat. A sequel was planned but never released.
The game returns to the Kingdom of Ehb, which already featured as the setting of the first (but not second) game. Roughly 150 years after the events of Dungeon Siege, the 10th Legion, who provided stability and protection for the kingdom for 400 years, has almost completely been wiped out. 30 years before the game's setting, Jeyne Kassynder rallied the people of eastern Ehb and the Azunite Church against the Legion who she blamed for the death of the king (her father). Following a long and brutal campaign, she managed to kill the entire remnant of the Legion in a battle in the Rukkenvahl Forest and the royalist army of young Queen Roslyn has been driven deep into the mines of Glitterdelve, losing almost all of their power.
