Earth Defense Force 2: Invaders from Planet Space is a chaotic co-op shooter where you and three friends fight off waves of alien insects. The game drops you into giant mechs and heavy vehicles to blast through hordes of bugs using everything from grenades to sniper rifles. A new Air Raider class lets players switch to jetpack-based combat mid-mission while the English voiceover adds a tongue-in-cheek tone to the whole affair. The PlayStation Vita’s touchscreen handles vehicle controls but the focus stays firmly on fast-paced teamwork and carnage. The game builds on a formula that’s been around since the early 2000s but feels surprisingly fresh in 2014. Online matches can get hectic with four players shouting over comms as you juggle ground and air attacks. The sheer number of weapon upgrades and enemy types keeps each mission unpredictable. While the story is all but nonexistent it doesn’t matter, this is pure arcade-style fun for players who like to blow things up with friends. The Vita port makes it easier to play on the go than previous versions.
