"For those who never got to experience the game back in the '90s there was always the chance that EarthBound was over-hyped bobbins, a game that couldn't possibly live up to its reputation as a quirky, 16-bit masterpiece. However, as so many have discovered in the years since it's become more widely available, Mother 2 (as the coolest kids call it) is still a touching, engaging, genuinely brilliant adventure to go on - a lengthy experience that's wonderfully humorous and fun from start to finish. It remains an absolute must-play for any Nintendo fan and fortunately it's much easier to play nowadays than it was for a long time. If you've never had the pleasure, get stuck in immediately and finally understand why bands of fans won't pipe down about Mother 3."

EarthBound is a quirky turn-based RPG released in 1994 by Nintendo for the Super Famicom. It follows Ness, a boy from a suburban American setting who leaves home after a meteor crash. You team up with friends like Paula and Jeff to stop an alien god named Giygas. The game features eight distinct locations ranging from bustling cities to eerie caves. Unlike traditional fantasy RPGs, this title swaps medieval knights for kids in modern clothes fighting with baseball bats and psychic powers. It was originally a Japan-only release before finding fame globally on the SNES. Later ports appeared on Wii U, New Nintendo 3DS, and Game Boy Advance. This game stands out as a sequel to Earthbound Beginnings but offers a completely fresh narrative about growing up while saving the world from cosmic horror.
You control a party of four characters in a classic turn-based battle system. Combat happens on a separate screen where you select actions like Attack, Magic, or Item from a menu. Your party members have unique abilities such as telekinesis or healing that change how you approach fights. Exploration involves walking through overworld areas and towns to find shops and talk to NPCs who offer strange dialogue. You collect melodies to restore your PSI energy which fuels your psychic attacks. Battles can feel tense since enemies often use status effects like sleep or paralysis. The game tracks your progress by collecting these songs at specific sanctuaries scattered across the map. You manage inventory items that range from healing drinks to weapons that deal massive damage in a single hit.
PlayPile data shows this title holds an IGDB score of 91.3 out of 100 based on 543 user ratings. Critics remain divided but generally praise the game's lasting charm. Nintendo Life gave it a perfect 100 while RPG Fan awarded it a 92 noting that nothing has matched its satire in nearly thirty years. Our community vibes list Atmospheric and Strategic as the top descriptors with four votes each, followed by Chill with two votes. Players report an average playtime of around 35 hours to finish the main story. Completion rates suggest about 68 percent of players see the game through to the final boss. Review snippets highlight how the emotional weight of the story resonates long after the credits roll.
This game is worth your time if you enjoy narrative-driven RPGs with a distinct sense of humor and atmosphere. It runs roughly $15 on modern consoles depending on the region and platform version. There are no achievements to chase on the original releases but later ports add collectibles for completionists. The price reflects its status as a classic that demands patience rather than reflexes. You will likely spend your evenings reading dialogue trees instead of grinding levels. EarthBound works best when you embrace its strange tone without expecting traditional fantasy tropes. It remains a solid choice for anyone looking to play a story-heavy JRPG with a modern twist on the genre.
The story begins when Ness is awakened by a meteor that has plummeted to the earth near his home, whereupon he proceeds to investigate the crash site. When Ness gets to the crash site he discovers a police roadblock and Pokey Minch, his friend and neighbor, who tells him to go home. Later, Ness is woken up again by Pokey knocking at his door, demanding help to find his brother Picky. They find him near the meteor sleeping behind a tree and wake him up. Then the three encounter an insect from the meteor named Buzz Buzz who informs Ness that he is from the future where the "universal cosmic destroyer", Giygas, dominates the planet. Buzz Buzz senses great potential in Ness and instructs him to embark on a journey to seek out and record the melodies of eight "sanctuaries," unite his own powers with the Earth's and gain the strength required to confront Giygas.
