About

Earthlight is a single-player shooter for ZX Spectrum that leans into technical experimentation. As Slaatn, an alien navigator stranded on Earth’s moon, you battle to disable energy transmitters disrupting your ship. The gameplay revolves around navigating multi-layered levels with shifting enemies, using basic but responsive shooting mechanics. The Spectrum’s limitations are pushed through parallax scrolling and partial shadow effects, creating depth few games on the platform achieved. The game’s biggest draw is its visual polish given the hardware. For 1988, the use of layered backgrounds and pseudo-3D movement made it one of the more ambitious shooters on 8-bit systems. Players who remember the Spectrum era often cite its atmosphere, glitchy but deliberate, as a reason to revisit. While not complex by modern standards, it remains a curiosity for those interested in early technical ingenuity.

Storyline

The player takes the role of an alien explorer from the star-system of Arcturus, called Slaatn, who has been drawn off-course by a beam of energy from Earth and has had to make a landing on the moon. Slaatn must neutralise the box-like transmitters and thus eliminate the force field.
