Echo Night is a haunting adventure from FromSoftware that casts you as a sailor investigating the disappearance of the Orpheus. You explore the ship’s dim corridors solving puzzles to unlock progress while interacting with spirits trapped in unresolved memories. Some ghosts need help fulfilling unfinished business to move on others see you as a threat. Switching on lights wards off aggressive apparitions letting you advance through the ship’s eerie depths. The game stands out for its moody atmosphere and clever use of light as a survival mechanic. While puzzle solutions often tie to environmental storytelling players balance exploration with quick reflexes to avoid spectral attacks. With a 84 on Metacritic and a cult following it remains a standout early example of FromSoftware’s knack for blending mystery and tension. Available on PlayStation platforms since its 1998 debut it offers a focused single player experience that leans into slow burn discovery over action.
In Echo Night you roam around a ship called the Orpheus, searching for items and releasing the souls of ghosts roaming the ship by helping them fill their final wishes so that they can find peace. Helping ghosts give you items that allow you to progress in the game, also in general adventure game fashion, there are puzzles you must complete to receive new items. There are evil ghosts haunted by their memories that will attack you, preventing you from progressing in the game. You can temporarily banish the ghosts by putting on the lights in each room.
