"FromSoftware doesn’t rewrite the medium’s rulebook, but does tear its own tenets asunder while reconstructing them into a cohesive whole that outclasses all that came before it. The Lands Between invites you to explore it with an unparalleled level of freedom, offering up a plate of seemingly impenetrable challenges and intimately constructed stories that are always a delight to indulge in. This is, without doubt, one of the best games in recent memory."

Elden Ring launched on February 25, 2022 as an action role-playing adventure from FromSoftware. Bandai Namco published this title across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and PC. Director Hidetaka Miyazaki led development with world-building help from George R. R. Martin. You play as a Tarnished exile returning to the Lands Between to repair a shattered Elden Ring. The setting features massive open zones filled with ruins, castles, and dangerous bosses. It arrived at a time when players wanted more freedom than previous FromSoftware titles allowed. This game blends difficult combat with exploration mechanics that let you wander off the beaten path whenever you choose.
You start by customizing your character before entering a vast world where death is frequent but not permanent. Combat relies on stamina management, precise timing for dodges and attacks, and heavy equipment loads. You can summon spirits or other players for co-op help when stuck on a tough boss. Exploration happens through riding spectral mounts across rolling hills or sneaking into hidden catacombs. The game tracks your progress with 42 achievements that most people struggle to unlock fully since only 41.7% have completed them all. Weather changes and day-night cycles alter enemy placement in real time. You spend hours grinding for upgrades or hunting for legendary weapons while avoiding traps scattered throughout the map.
Critics loved this release with Metacritic and OpenCritic both giving it 95 out of 100 points. IGDB ratings sit at 95.2 out of 100 based on 2026 data. The PlayPile community logged an average playtime of 47.7 hours across three active members. User moods skew emotional with three votes, followed by cooperative and strategic vibes. Review snippets from God is a Geek and Hardcore Gamer both gave perfect scores for its depth and combat satisfaction. Twitch rankings place it at number 70 currently despite being released years ago. Players find the world incredibly dense but often frustrated by hidden secrets that take dozens of hours to uncover naturally without guides.
Elden Ring costs as low as fifteen dollars on Green Man Gaming but historically dipped to forty-four. This is a game for people who enjoy punishing difficulty and don't mind dying repeatedly. You get 42 achievements to chase though the average completion rate sits below half. The price point makes it an easy buy even if you struggle with the later bosses. Don't play this if you want a linear story or easy combat encounters. Stick around long enough to see the ending and you will understand why critics gave it nearly perfect scores. It remains one of the hardest challenges available on modern consoles today.
Elden Ring takes place in the Lands Between, a fictional realm over which several demigods rule. It was previously ruled over by the immortal Queen Marika, who acted as keeper of the Elden Ring, a powerful force that manifested itself as the physical concept of order. When Marika shattered the Elden Ring and disappeared, her demigod children began fighting over pieces of the Ring in an event called The Shattering. Each demigod has a shard of the Ring called a Great Rune, which corrupts them with power. In the game, the player character is a Tarnished, one of a group of exiles from the Lands Between who are summoned back after the Shattering. The player must traverse the realm to repair the Elden Ring and become the Elden Lord.
