"FromSoftware doesn’t rewrite the medium’s rulebook, but does tear its own tenets asunder while reconstructing them into a cohesive whole that outclasses all that came before it. The Lands Between invites you to explore it with an unparalleled level of freedom, offering up a plate of seemingly impenetrable challenges and intimately constructed stories that are always a delight to indulge in. This is, without doubt, one of the best games in recent memory."

FromSoftware dropped this massive action RPG in February 2022. It launched on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and various PC versions before hitting newer consoles. You play as a Tarnished exile returning to the Lands Between to mend a broken golden order. George R. R. Martin helped craft the lore behind the shattered Elden Ring while Hidetaka Miyazaki directed the experience. The game trades tight level design for a large open world where you can ride, fight, and explore without loading screens blocking your path. It feels like a natural evolution of the studio's previous work but with much more freedom to roam between dungeons.
You spend most of your time sprinting across hills on spectral steed until you spot an enemy camp. Combat relies on precise dodging, heavy weapon swings, and spell casting rather than button mashing. You have a stamina bar that depletes with every attack or roll so you must manage resources carefully during boss fights. The game offers single player mode but also lets players summon others for co-op or invade their worlds as enemies. You will find weapons, armor sets, and talismans scattered everywhere. Weather changes dynamically and day cycles affect where certain foes appear. Your character builds vary wildly based on stats you choose to level up after defeating major bosses.
Critics are almost unanimous with a Metacritic score of 95 and OpenCritic giving it a 97.55% recommendation rate. Players on PlayPile have logged an average of 47.7 hours so far across four active users. The community vibes lean heavily toward emotional experiences with three votes, followed by cooperative play and strategic thinking. Achievements show a low completion rate since only 41.7% of the 42 total unlocks are claimed on average. Critics call it game-changing with one reviewer noting its immense deadly open world while another praises the satisfying combat system. Current Twitch rankings place it at number 37 among trending titles.
This title is for players who enjoy high difficulty curves and want to explore a detailed world without hand-holding guides. The current cheapest price sits at $15 on Green Man Gaming which represents a significant drop from the historical low of $44.99. Only 42 achievements exist yet most users struggle past the first major boss due to the steep learning curve. You should buy this if you are willing to fail repeatedly and learn enemy patterns rather than looking for a casual experience. The value is solid now that prices have dropped but expect dozens of hours of frustration before finding your footing in the Lands Between.
Elden Ring takes place in the Lands Between, a fictional realm over which several demigods rule. It was previously ruled over by the immortal Queen Marika, who acted as keeper of the Elden Ring, a powerful force that manifested itself as the physical concept of order. When Marika shattered the Elden Ring and disappeared, her demigod children began fighting over pieces of the Ring in an event called The Shattering. Each demigod has a shard of the Ring called a Great Rune, which corrupts them with power. In the game, the player character is a Tarnished, one of a group of exiles from the Lands Between who are summoned back after the Shattering. The player must traverse the realm to repair the Elden Ring and become the Elden Lord.
