Elite Plus is a space-based simulator that lets you pilot a ship across a galaxy filled with trade routes, combat encounters, and uncharted systems. You manage resources, navigate hazards, and engage in dogfights or barter with alien traders. The game emphasizes exploration and strategy over combat, though both are present. A key feature is the ninth galaxy, a hidden area reachable only by navigating the dangerous Witch Space region. Controls are straightforward but require some learning, and the interface leans heavily into keyboard commands. Released in 1991, Elite Plus was technically ambitious for its time, using assembly language to push DOS hardware further than most games. Its upgraded graphics support for EGA/VGA/MCGA made it stand out on older systems. Chris Sawyer, the developer, later became known for RollerCoaster Tycoon, but this early work laid the groundwork for his career. The game’s cult following persists among retro computing enthusiasts, who praise its depth despite dated visuals. It’s a niche title but remains a notable entry in early ’90s simulation design.
