About

EMIT Vol. 1: Toki no Maigo is a narrative-driven adventure game that mixes story with language lessons. Developed by Koei in 1994, it follows Yuri, a high school student who meets an enigmatic man at a crosswalk. After a cryptic exchange involving the word "Emit," her life takes an unexpected turn when a mysterious young man appears a month later. Players navigate branching dialogue and choices that shape Yuri’s interactions, blending personal stories with English vocabulary exercises. The gameplay feels like following a visual novel with light puzzle elements, where decisions influence relationships and plot direction. What makes EMIT stand out is its unusual purpose as an educational tool wrapped in a character-driven mystery. While not widely known outside Japan, it’s remembered by retro gaming circles for its early attempt to merge learning with entertainment. The game’s age shows in its presentation, but the core story of Yuri’s unfolding connection to the strange man remains engaging. With release on multiple platforms from Super Famicom to 3DO, it’s a curiosity for collectors and fans of niche adventure games. Small but dedicated forums discuss its cryptic plot and linguistic challenges.

Storyline

On October 5, 1994, a seventeen year old high school student named Yuri meets a polite yet mysterious elderly gentleman at the crosswalk. Although puzzled by his questions, she answers them honestly to the best of her ability. As Yuri walks across the street, she hears the man mutter the word "Emit" to her. Yuri thinks nothing of the conversation until an oddly familiar yet attractive young man approaches her a month later on the street.
