You play as Masao Coda, a rebel fighting a corporate empire in this 1996 PlayStation shooter. The Gigari virus has driven humanity underground, where the Byflos Group rules over Neural City with an iron fist. Armed with a powered armor suit, you blast through waves of robots and fortified bases to rescue your infected girlfriend before the virus wipes out what's left of the human race. The game mixes on-foot gunplay with mechs and hovercraft, letting you switch between vehicles and weapons as you clear each level. Epidemic leans into chaotic, over-the-top action more than its predecessor. While the story gets tangled in 90s sci-fi clichés, the fast-paced combat and destructible environments keep things engaging. Early PlayStation visuals hold up surprisingly well for the era, especially the detailed robot designs. A cult following has kept this sequel remembered as one of the more aggressive shooters of its time. The mission to save both your loved one and the world makes for a surprisingly driven narrative in a genre often short on stakes.
