About Escape Velocity

Escape Velocity is a physics-driven puzzle shooter set in a collapsing bomb factory. You play Gerund, an alien ant tasked with escaping their ruined workplace using the Starter, a prototype demolition tool. Developed by Rats with Wings, it released on December 31, 2026, for PC. The game blends platforming with explosive problem-solving, where you break walls, launch objects, and chain explosions to progress. Single-player only, with a focus on precise timing and trial-and-error logic. The story revolves around Gerund’s desperate attempt to rescue their CEO from a collapsing facility, though things don’t go as planned.

Gameplay

Escape Velocity’s core loop centers on the Starter tool. You place charges on surfaces, ignite them to break rubble, or use their force to propel yourself upward or fling objects as projectiles. Each level is a maze of crumbling platforms and hazards, requiring you to experiment with charge placement and timing. For example, you might prime a wall to collapse a bridge, then use the resulting debris to reach a higher ledge. The controls are responsive but demand precision, misfiring a charge can leave you stranded. Sessions often last 15, 20 minutes per level, with later stages introducing puzzles like priming multiple charges in sequence. The Starter’s versatility keeps things dynamic, though the game’s reliance on physics can feel finicky at times.

What Players Think

PlayPile users rate Escape Velocity 89%, with a 91% completion rate and an average playtime of 13 hours. 57% of players feel accomplished, 33% frustrated, and 10% bored. Positive reviews praise the Starter’s creativity, like one player noting, “The way you chain explosions to solve puzzles is unmatched.” Critics flag inconsistent physics, with one user writing, “It’s maddening when charges misfire due to invisible walls.” The game costs $29.99, with 72% of players earning at least 50% of achievements. Completionists highlight the 128 achievements (32% completion average), including tricky platforming challenges.

PlayPile's Take

Escape Velocity works best for players who enjoy physics-based puzzles and don’t mind grinding for precision. The Starter’s mechanics are inventive, but the game’s difficulty spikes and occasional glitches may frustrate newcomers. With a 13-hour average playtime and 72% achievement completion, it’s a short but challenging experience. At $29.99, it’s a solid pick for fans of lateral thinking and explosive problem-solving. Skip it if you dislike trial-and-error gameplay or physics-based inconsistency.

Storyline

The planet of Aculeata, where you and all your alien ant friends live, is being bombed and it might be your company's fault. Scratch that, it's definitely your company's fault. More specifically, your CEO Rojar's fault. While your co-workers flee, you, Gerund, brave the crumbling facility to rescue Rojar after he, for once, asks for help. You don't make it in time to save him, but he leaves you a gift: the Starter, an experimental blasting tool that is critical for making your way out of the now-ruined facility.
