Extreme-G is a high speed racing game where players control futuristic bikes through derelict cityscapes. The gameplay centers on aggressive racing with power-ups that let you attack opponents and defend yourself using an energy shield. Each track is a gauntlet of obstacles and rival racers where you can boost past them or blast them out of the way. The game supports split screen multiplayer letting two players battle for the top spot in each race. The game’s 1997 release brought its chaotic mix of speed and combat to Nintendo 64. While the single player mode tells a story about Earth’s wasteland past and off world colonies, most players remember it for the competitive multiplayer. The ability to regenerate energy between checkpoints adds strategy without slowing the pace. With its emphasis on direct conflict over pure racing, Extreme-G carved a niche that still stands out among classic N64 titles.
Extreme-G is set in the distant future where Earth is reduced into a wasteland. From their new-found planet the human colonists watch their remote controlled bikes wreak havoc through their ancient cities and fight their way to determine which racer manages to qualify.
