Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel is a spinoff RPG with beat 'em up elements that trades open-world exploration for a structured, story-driven experience. Played as one of three characters, Cain, Cyrus, or Nadia, you track missing Brotherhood members in the desert town of Carbon, progressing through 50 distinct zones that open sequentially. Combat blends melee and VATS-style targeting, with action points spent on attacks, dodges, or using items. The game retains the core SPECIAL attributes but locks them at fixed values per character, shifting focus to skill upgrades earned through leveling. Skills function more like passive perks, requiring points to enhance and often gated by level limits. The game’s linear design and simplified systems make it a stark contrast to broader Fallout titles. Its 2004 release on Xbox and PlayStation 2 gave it early 2000s console polish, with some fans praising its tighter narrative while others miss the series’ signature freedom. Each character’s playstyle diverges slightly, offering varied approaches to encounters and dialogue. Though divisive, Brotherhood of Steel remains a niche entry that leans into action-paced progression over sandbox exploration.
Immediately prior to Brotherhood of Steel, the three playable characters (Cain, Cyrus, and Nadia) have joined the Brotherhood as new Initiates. After selecting which character to play as (hereafter referred to as the Initiate), the game opens with the Initiate searching for missing Paladins in the nearby town of Carbon.
