Family Dog is a chaotic 1992 SNES platformer where you control a misfit canine navigating three distinct environments. As the family pet, you dodge tennis balls and vacuum cleaners in a house filled with traps, then escape a militarized obedience school guarded by aggressive Dobermans. The final level shifts to a wild forest where you use acrobatics like flips and spins to collect bones while fending off predators. Power-ups and a fetch mini-game add brief respites between the relentless obstacle courses. Based on a short-lived Spielberg and Tim Burton animated series, the game leans into its absurd premise with quirky level design. While its rough difficulty and dated visuals haven't aged smoothly, retro fans appreciate its bizarre charm and variety of genres crammed into a single title. The blend of platforming, strategy and simulator elements remains a curious artifact of early 90s experimentation. With a runtime under two hours, it’s a brisk if frustrating trip through one of the SNES’s more niche adventures.
