Fantasy Zone II is a 1987 shooter where you pilot a winged ship called Opa-Opa through a series of worlds filled with giant creatures. Your goal is to destroy each large enemy which drops currency you can spend on weapons like laser beams and multi-directional shots. Between waves swarms of smaller enemies complicate the mission. Each defeated boss might reward a dollar or a warp gate letting you navigate different areas. The challenge ramps up as you hunt for a special stop-shaped warp gate that leads to the final boss. What sets it apart is the balance of resource management and strategy. Money isn't just for buying power-ups, it's your key to accessing hidden paths and upgrading your ship. However weapons bought in the shop only last temporarily forcing you to plan purchases carefully. The game's mix of flight-based combat and ground movement offers flexibility while the need to defeat every large creature before progressing adds structure. Available on retro platforms like the Sega Master System and now playable on Wii it retains a cult following among classic shooter fans.
