Fighter's History is a 1993 fighting game from Data East that brought a fresh twist to the genre. Players choose from a roster of warriors and battle in one-on-one matches, using a unique weak point system to target specific body areas. Landing hits on these spots can briefly disable an opponent’s limbs or defenses, adding tactical depth to the action. The game offers three modes: a standard arcade challenge, a survival format with team-based battles, and local multiplayer for head-to-head duels. The controls are straightforward but require timing to exploit weaknesses effectively. The game’s design drew major controversy. Capcom sued Data East in 1994, claiming it copied Street Fighter II’s visuals and mechanics. The court ruled in Data East’s favor, stating the similarities were inevitable tropes of the genre. Despite the legal drama, Fighter’s History carved a niche with its creative mechanics. It hit arcades in 1993 and later made the jump to SNES in 1994. A sequel, Karnov’s Revenge, followed for Neo Geo, but the original remains notable for its risky innovation and role in a landmark copyright case.
