About

Fighter's History 2 is a 2D fighting game that mixes competitive combat with a goofy, story-driven campaign. Play as Mizoguchi, a brawler with a knack for miscommunication, as he squares off against a roster of familiar fighters across single-player and multiplayer bouts. The game’s mechanics lean into fast-paced action with simple controls, making it easy to pick up but tricky to master. Matches take place in straightforward arenas, with the focus staying squarely on head-to-head duels and the game’s offbeat humor. What sets it apart is its absurd narrative. Mizoguchi’s quest to defend Osaka’s takoyaki street food leads to a globetrotting romp filled with wordplay, misunderstandings, and run-ins with a shadowy rival. The dialogue leans into slapstick and puns, giving it a charm that feels distinctly 90s. Originally Japan-only, its 2017 international release through Retro-Bit’s compilation gave western players a chance to catch up. With its quirky personality and solid fighting loop, it’s a niche but memorable entry in the genre.

Storyline

The story mode is a gag-adventure story which stars Mizoguchi. Out on a leisurely outing, he takes a break to enjoy his town's specialty: takoyaki (or octopus balls). Before he can place an order, he is confronted by a mysterious man who challenges him to prove the snack's worth against the whole world. After the man disappears in a flash of light, Mizoguchi is somehow provoked enough to search the globe's octopus dishes and to prove that Osaka has the best takoyaki in the world. He does this by awkwardly interrogating the series's characters although he usually misinterprets their explanations as insults or puns.
