About Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles arrives on September 30, 2025, as a definitive remake of the classic tactical RPG from Square Enix Creative Studio III. This updated version brings the story of the War of the Lions to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Nintendo Switch, and the upcoming Switch 2. The plot follows a kingdom torn apart by ambition after its king dies, leaving a toddler on the throne. Two powerful dukes, Goltanna and Larg, fight for control in a conflict defined by betrayal and honor. This remake features fully voiced dialogue, improved graphics, and quality-of-life updates that make the dense strategy accessible to modern players while keeping the original narrative intact.

Gameplay

You command squads of units on grid-based battlefields where positioning matters more than raw stats. Each character has a specific job class like Knight or Mime that dictates their moveset and equipment options. You issue orders for movement, attacks, and item use during your turn before waiting for enemies to react. The campaign mode presents a long single-player story with no multiplayer elements. New difficulty settings let you tweak the challenge level, while an auto-save feature prevents progress loss during intense sessions. The revamped UI makes inventory management faster, allowing you to focus on tactical decisions rather than navigating menus. Battles feel methodical and punishing when you misjudge enemy ranges or ignore terrain bonuses.

What Players Think

The PlayPile community has already rated Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles highly. IGDB shows a score of 84.3 out of 100 based on ten early ratings, indicating strong critical approval. Players report average playtimes stretching past 40 hours due to the depth of the job system and multiple endings. Community moods lean heavily toward "nostalgic" and "satisfied," with many users praising the new voice acting for adding emotional weight to key scenes. Completion rates sit at 72% among those who have finished the main story, suggesting the difficulty curve remains steep. Review snippets frequently mention the auto-save as a game-changing quality-of-life improvement that reduces frustration during long campaigns.

PlayPile's Take

This remake is worth your time if you want to experience a complex tactical RPG without the barriers of its 1997 origin. The price point reflects the extensive rework, but the included features like auto-save and voiced dialogue justify the cost for newcomers. Achievements track your mastery of different job classes and completion rates. It is not for players who prefer fast-paced action or casual mobile gaming experiences. The game demands patience and strategic thinking. You will spend dozens of hours mastering unit placement and resource management in this updated version of a classic tale.

Storyline

Ivalice—a kingdom blessed by the light of the gods and ruled by the Two-headed Lion. A year after her defeat to Ordallia in the Fifty Years' War, the king succumbed to malady, leaving a mere boy of two to ascend the throne. Whoever was named regent would rule in truth, and thus emerged two rival candidates: dukes Goltanna and Larg, whose deeds during the war had earned them great renown. Goltanna the Black Lion and Larg the White Lion were destined to clash, and the resulting conflict would come to be known as the War of the Lions.
