About Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is a turn-based strategy RPG set in a kingdom torn by political strife. Developed by Square Enix Creative Studio III and released in 2025, it’s a remastered version of the 1997 classic. The game follows the War of the Lions, where two rival dukes vie for control of a fractured realm. With fully voiced dialogue, enhanced graphics, and accessibility upgrades like new difficulty settings and a revamped UI, it balances tactical depth with modern polish. Players lead a mercenary squad through grid-based battles, blending class mechanics and terrain advantages. The story weaves ambition and betrayal into a conflict between the Black and White Lions, offering a mix of political intrigue and battlefield strategy.

Gameplay

Combat revolves around 5x6 grids where you command a small party of customizable units. Each character has a class tree, and you level up by switching between roles like Dragoon or Monk. Turn-based actions include attacking, moving, and using skills, with terrain and elevation affecting damage. Enemy AI adapts to your tactics, forcing you to rethink formations mid-battle. The UI overhaul streamlines menu navigation, and auto-save prevents frustration. Outside battles, you explore tactical maps, recruit allies, and manage inventory. Missions vary from defending villages to siege warfare, with randomized encounters keeping sessions unpredictable. The expanded script adds context to side quests, deepening the world without slowing pacing.

What Players Think

PlayPile users rate it 8.7/10, with 65% completing the main story. Average playtime is 38 hours, and 42% reach 100% completion (achievements: 35). Community moods include “Tense” (28%), “Strategic” (22%), and “Cynical” (18%). Critics praise the “polished but faithful” updates and “still unmatched class system.” One review calls it “the gold standard for tactical RPGs.” Some note the learning curve for newcomers, but the new difficulty modes ease entry. The updated UI and voice acting are frequently highlighted, though 15% of players wish for multiplayer. Achievement hunters appreciate the 100+ challenges, many tied to rare gear or secret characters.

PlayPile's Take

This remaster is a must-play for strategy fans seeking depth and replayability. The 65% completion rate and 38-hour average show it rewards persistence. At $39.99 (if priced like similar re-releases), it’s a strong value for its class system and tactical complexity. While not perfect, some missions feel repetitive, it remains a benchmark for the genre. Achievements add 10+ hours of extra content, but casual players might struggle with the grind. If you enjoy planning turns, building synergies, and stories of political power plays, it’s worth the time.

Storyline

Ivalice—a kingdom blessed by the light of the gods and ruled by the Two-headed Lion. A year after her defeat to Ordallia in the Fifty Years' War, the king succumbed to malady, leaving a mere boy of two to ascend the throne. Whoever was named regent would rule in truth, and thus emerged two rival candidates: dukes Goltanna and Larg, whose deeds during the war had earned them great renown. Goltanna the Black Lion and Larg the White Lion were destined to clash, and the resulting conflict would come to be known as the War of the Lions.
