About Final Fantasy XVI

Final Fantasy XVI arrived on June 22, 2023 from Square Enix Creative Business Unit III. This single-player action RPG dropped on PlayStation 5 first and later landed on PC and Xbox Series X|S. The story follows Clive Rosfield in Valisthea, a realm where nations clash over dwindling magical crystals and summoned Eikons. It trades the turn-based roots of its predecessors for real-time combat that feels weighty and cinematic. You play as a shield bearer whose life fractures after a tragedy forces him into a path of vengeance. The game blends high-fantasy politics with brutal swordplay and magical transformations. It stands as a massive, narrative-heavy experience that prioritizes character drama alongside explosive set pieces.

Gameplay

You control Clive through fast-paced combat where timing matters more than menu selection. Your attacks flow into combos, parries, and dodges while you manage stamina to unleash Eikon abilities. These transformations let you switch from human form to giant elemental avatars during intense boss fights or chaotic arena battles. The game world features expansive zones filled with optional quests and hidden secrets rather than a tight linear corridor. You unlock skill trees to customize your playstyle, choosing between heavy weapons that deal massive damage or faster tools for crowd control. Sessions involve exploring towns, talking to party members, and engaging in repetitive but satisfying enemy encounters. Bosses demand pattern recognition and precise execution of your upgraded moveset. There are no multiplayer modes here, so every decision rests entirely on your shoulders as you push through the campaign.

What Players Think

Critics and players agree this is a strong entry. Metacritic holds an 88 out of 100 while IGDB lists an average score of 87.7 based on 194 ratings. PlayPile data shows the community feels a heavy sense of determination, with many users logging significant hours to see the ending. Average playtime hovers around 35 hours for the main story, though completionists push past 60. The achievement system presents a real challenge with 69 total unlocks and an average completion rate of only 27.9 percent. The rarest trophy, "The Chronicler," remains locked for just 2.00 percent of players who have tried it. Review snippets often praise the combat flow while noting the story gets dark quickly. Users consistently mention the difficulty spikes in late-game encounters as a defining trait of their experience.

PlayPile's Take

This title fits players who want a long, story-driven adventure with tough combat mechanics. The price point reflects its scope as a full retail release on current generation hardware. Achievements offer substantial grind for completionists, especially that elusive 2 percent trophy. You will spend time mastering parries and learning boss patterns rather than grinding levels for easy wins. Square Enix delivered a polished product that respects your time but demands skill. If you prefer action over turn-based systems, this game delivers consistently. The lack of multiplayer modes means the experience ends when the credits roll. Go in ready to engage with heavy combat and complex lore without expecting hand-holding throughout the journey.

Storyline

The sun is setting upon the land of Valisthea. For centuries, people have flocked to her Mothercrystals to partake of their blessing—the abundant aether that fuels the magicks they rely upon in their everyday lives. As the aether begins to fade and the lifeless deadlands spread ever further, so too does the struggle for possession of the final flickers of the Mothers' light grow ever more fierce. Yet amidst the gathering storm, there are those who believe that the legacy of the crystals has shaped mankind's destiny for long enough.
