About

Final Lap is a competitive racing game built for arcade showdowns. It let up to eight players race simultaneously on the Suzuka Circuit using linked cabinets, making it one of the first multiplayer racers of its scale. Players could battle in a best-of-four laps format or tackle single-player time trials where points were earned based on distance covered. The game ran on Namco’s System 2 hardware and added visual polish like detailed course designs and dynamic car handling. What stuck was its early use of "rubber banding" to keep slower drivers in the race, a gameplay tweak later popularized by Mario Kart. The ability to connect four cabinets for eight-player matches was unheard of at the time, creating chaotic, shoulder-to-shoulder competition. Though buried under later racing titles, it remains a key moment in arcade history. Its mix of strategy and reflexes earned it a cult reputation, with retro players praising its raw, no-holds-barred multiplayer chaos.
