Fire and Darkness started as a three-dimensional real-time strategy effort by Singularity Software. Players pick one of two factions to battle for control of planetary resources. The gameplay loop focuses on gathering supplies and building an army to crush the opposing side. Even though the project never reached full completion, the team built enough content to create a solid experience for testing. This unfinished title actually won the Seumas McNally Grand Prize at the 1999 Independent Games Festival. That award recognized how well the developers pushed the RTS genre forward despite the limited scope. Many people still discuss this game today because of that early victory and the potential it showed. It remains a notable piece of indie history even without a finished release.
