About Firewatch

Firewatch dropped on February 9, 2016 as a single-player indie adventure from Campo Santo. You play Henry, who takes a summer job watching for smoke in the Wyoming wilderness after a messy personal life forces him to retreat there. The game launched across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, Mac, and Linux. Instead of combat or complex puzzles, the story moves through dialogue and exploration. Your only link to the outside world is a radio connection with Delilah, your supervisor back at the lookout tower. What starts as a quiet gig turns into something stranger as you investigate strange occurrences in the woods while deciding how much to trust the person on the other end of the line.

Gameplay

Most sessions involve walking through dense forests and climbing rocky paths while checking off tasks like finding artifacts or clearing brush. You control Henry with standard movement keys or a controller, using a radio to talk to Delilah whenever you want. Conversations happen in real time without cutscenes interrupting your flow, letting you ask questions or keep quiet as you see fit. The core loop relies on exploration and listening rather than fast reflexes. You might spend twenty minutes just hiking up a trail to find a specific spot mentioned in a radio call. Choices in dialogue change how Delilah reacts later, sometimes leading to new story branches or shutting down topics entirely. There is no combat system, so tension comes from the atmosphere and what you uncover on your own.

What Players Think

The PlayPile data shows 1164 ratings on IGDB with a score of 79 out of 100. Players describe the experience as nostalgic, wholesome, or emotional based on recent community moods. Average playtime sits around six to eight hours for most people who finish the main story. Completion rates suggest many players stick around until the end, though some get stuck wondering about specific choices. Review snippets mention strong writing and memorable characters more than graphics or mechanics. One user noted the silence of the mountains made the radio conversations feel intimate. Another called it a perfect summer game despite the dry heat in the setting. The vibe is consistently low-key with very few complaints about pacing or length.

PlayPile's Take

Firewatch works best for people who want a short, story-driven game without combat pressure. At the time of launch, it sold for standard indie prices on most platforms and includes achievement tracking for those who care about completion. The game demands patience since you spend hours walking and talking instead of fighting or solving complex puzzles. It is not for players seeking action or replayability through branching endings that drastically change the plot. You get one solid narrative arc with a few variations in dialogue outcomes. If you enjoy first-person exploration and character study, this title delivers a focused experience that fits well into a single weekend.

Storyline

The year is 1989. You are a man named Henry who has retreated from your messy life to work as a fire lookout in the Wyoming wilderness. Perched atop a mountain, it's your job to find smoke and keep the wilderness safe. An especially hot, dry summer has everyone on edge. Your supervisor, a woman named Delilah, is available to you at all times over a small, handheld radio—and is your only contact with the world you've left behind. But when something strange draws you out of your lookout tower and into the world below, you'll explore a wild and unknown environment, facing questions and making interpersonal choices that can build or destroy the only meaningful relationship you have.
