Flipnote Studio is a 2D animation tool for Nintendo DSi that lets players create flipbook-style animations using the touchscreen. Users draw each frame with the stylus add sounds from a built in library then string them together into looping videos. The system handles timing and transitions letting you focus on sketching expressive characters or silly gags. Finished projects can be shared directly with others via the DSi's connectivity features. What set this apart was its community driven creativity. Hundreds of thousands of user made animations circulated online with many still shared or remixed today. The free price tag made it accessible to casual creators while its simple tools let almost anyone make something shareable. Though officially discontinued support in 2014 the projects people made back then remain playable through archived sites and homebrew solutions.
