About Flotsam

Flotsam is a survival simulator with strategy elements set in a floating garbage town. Developed by Pajama Llama and published by Stray Fawn Publishing, it released on December 4, 2025, for PC. You manage a ragtag community of drifters navigating a post-apocalyptic ocean, scavenging debris to build structures, collect resources, and avoid threats like predators and sinking. The colorful world contrasts its harsh challenges, balancing creativity with resourcefulness to keep your town afloat. Single-player only, it leans into indie charm with a focus on recycling old-world materials into new homes. Best for players who enjoy slow-burn base-building and environmental survival.

Gameplay

You steer a drifting town across a dynamic ocean, collecting flotsam to craft boats, buildings, and tools. Each session involves managing hunger, thirst, and safety while fending off creatures that attack your structures. Rainwater collection, fishing, and scavenging the seabed for scrap are daily tasks. The town moves with the currents, requiring you to decide whether to avoid hazards or dismantle them for resources. Controls are intuitive, with a top-down view letting you micromanage drifter actions and town layout. The challenge lies in balancing expansion with sustainability, overextend, and your town sinks. The colorful art style masks a punishing survival loop, testing your ability to adapt to shifting environments.

What Players Think

Flotsam holds a 4.3/5 on PlayPile, with 78% of players finishing the main campaign. Average playtime is 19 hours, and 32% of players unlock all 120 achievements. Community moods skew optimistic (“Cute but brutal”) and curious (“Why does everything want to eat us?”). Critics praise its inventive resource system but note early-game pacing issues. One review on Steam says, “It’s like Minecraft at sea, but with more sharks.” The 87% completion rate for the “Recycle Everything” challenge suggests the crafting loop is satisfying. However, 15% of players abandon the game after three hours, citing unclear tutorials.

PlayPile's Take

Flotsam is a niche gem for survival and strategy fans. At $29.99, it offers 20+ hours of tense, creative management. The 120 achievements add replayability, but the learning curve is steep. It thrives in its unique concept, building a town from trash, but may frustrate those wanting hand-holding. If you enjoy methodically turning trash into treasure while dodging existential threats, this is worth the investment. Otherwise, skip for smoother survival experiences.

Storyline

Survive in a feel-good apocalypse world. Manage your drifters as they try to survive in a harsh ocean world, where everything is trying to eat you or sink your town to the depths of the sea! You’ll need fresh water, seafood, and scrap to make sure your drifters can make the best of this wet situation. Recycle everything! Luckily the flooded environment offers all kinds of relics from the old world to recycle. Your drifters can transform garbage, driftwood, and flotsam into boats and buildings. These allow them to collect rainwater, hunt for various creatures, and reel up scrap from the ocean floor. A moving floating town. Steer your town as you explore a sprawling, dynamic environment with tall ruins, underwater cities, and coral reefs full of sea life and garbage! Raise your sails to choose which obstacles to avoid and which to dismantle.
