"Golden Force attempts to relive the retro gameplay of yesteryear but, in some ways, falls on its own sword due to a number of issues. It is marketed as “Old school difficulty (but not so frustrating).” This ends up not being quite so true because of the aforementioned gameplay and technical issues, which range from instances of poor level design to noticeable frame rate issues. If you are not hardcore, then I can’t recommend this game due to the punishing gameplay. If you’re interested, I’d say this is probably one to grab when on sale unless you’re sure you’ll enjoy it. Some of the special collectibles are very hard to find, and between that and improving your performance on each stage, it will keep you busy for a long while. It’s certainly not the best retro-inspired title out there, as there are certainly a number of others that play better than this one. Golden Force is available on the Nintendo Switch eShop for $19.99, as well as on Xbox One and PlayStation 4. It is also coming to Steam sometime in Q1 2021."

About

Forget the Golden Witch is a visual novel puzzle game built as a spiritual sequel to Umineko no Naku Koro Ni. It repurposes assets and music from the original PS3 game but demands deep familiarity with its eight-episode story. Players navigate a murder mystery on a reimagined Rokkenjima where characters speak in purple text that’s either truthful or deceptive. Your job is to track contradictions and deduce the killer by identifying who’s lying. The gameplay hinges on close reading and logic rather than branching dialogue choices. This fan-made project strips away the series’ trademark magic and witches, focusing instead on cold human psychology. Every statement is a potential clue in a locked-room mystery that escalates with each new death. While it lacks official recognition, the game has drawn praise from veteran Umineko players for its clever subversion of expectations. With no supernatural elements to distract, it leans hard into the original’s themes of deception and moral rot. Best suited for those who’ve mastered the source material and crave a fresh but punishing take on its core ideas.

Storyline

Taking place on a very different version of Rokkenjima, the reader is challenged to solve a set of gruesome and increasingly more baffling murders. The rules of the game are simple: throughout the story, certain statements made by characters will be presented in purple-colored text. When the statement is given by an innocent character, the purple statement must be the truth. When spoken by the culprit, however, it does not have to be. An experienced reader of Umineko may worry about the existence of this so-called 'magic'. There is no need for such worries. There is no magic here. Not a single golden butterfly in sight. You need not hunt for a witch. For there is no witch to find. Forget her. Forget all of it. There are only people. And the monsters that wear human faces hiding among them.
