Formation Armed F is a side scrolling shooter where you pilot a ship through seven stages packed with enemy waves and environmental hazards. You shoot aliens while dodging their fire and avoiding hazards like gas clouds or shifting walls. Power ups boost your speed or swap in new weapons tailored to each level’s threats. Every stage introduces unique enemy behaviors and firepower. The twist comes when smaller ships link to your main craft, pressing a second fire button toggles between offensive and defensive formation. No save points mean you start fresh after each loss. The game stands out for its tight controls and punishing difficulty balanced by rewarding power up chains. Released in 1988 by Nichibutsu, it ran on arcades and later the TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine. The formation mechanic was rare for shooters at the time though it didn’t stick around past this title.
