Front Mission 1st: Remake drops you into a near-future war where battles are fought with towering Wanzers, mechanized suits that blend firearms and melee combat. Command squads of soldiers and mechs in turn-based maps that reward careful positioning and resource management. The story follows Royd Clive, a soldier investigating his missing partner’s disappearance on a contested island, figuring out political conspiracies through cutscenes and dialogue choices. Tactical depth comes from unit classes, customizable loadouts, and terrain-based modifiers that shift the battlefield. The remake builds on the 1995 original with updated visuals and refined mechanics. It holds a 78 on Metacritic, praised for its layered narrative and strategic complexity. Players note the lack of hand-holding for new mechanics might steepen the learning curve. With 30+ playable characters and a 20-hour campaign, the single-player mode focuses on squad dynamics and moral ambiguity. Multiplayer allows 1v1 duels or team-based matches, though community engagement remains niche. The game’s 2022 release brought it to all major platforms, making a once-regional RPG accessible worldwide.
In the year 2090, the world's conflicts are fought using giant war machines called Wanzers. Huffman Island, the only place where the Oceania Cooperative Union (O.C.U.) and the Unified Continental States (U.C.S.) share a land border is a hotbed of conflict. An O.C.U. reconnaissance platoon led by Captain Royd Clive is assigned to investigate a U.C.S. munitions plant. They are ambushed by U.C.S. Wanzers, triggering a series of events that plunges the whole island into war. Royd's fiancée, Lieutenant Karen Meure, goes missing in action. Discharged from the military, Royd sets out to investigate what happened to Karen. His quest leads him closer and closer to the conspiracy behind the incident and the powers that orchestrated it. With dozens of characters to meet, its mature story, and non-Manichean protagonists, Front Mission is the classic of a tactical Japanese RPG genre, finally available worldwide.
