GAG: The Impotent Mystery is a 1997 PC game that mashes up action, exploration, and absurdity. You play as Gary, a secret agent who shrugs off a chaotic dream about the "Dark Brotherhood" until his vacation ends. The story sends you from snoozing in bed to infiltrating a creepy castle, navigating surreal settings, and battling existential threats. Gameplay shifts between shooting, strategy planning, and point-and-click adventuring, often in the same level. The tone leans into self-aware humor, with dialogue and scenarios that mock genre tropes while keeping the plot weirdly coherent. The game stands out for its chaotic mix of styles and a script that embraces its own silliness. Despite its age, it’s remembered for pacing that jumps between deadpan and ridiculous, and for throwing multiple genres into one quirky package. Developed by ZES't Corporation, it’s a relic of late-90s experimentation that still feels oddly ahead of its time for blending so many mechanics without clear precedent.
Secret agent Gary wakes up at home after a strange dream, in which cultists of the "Dark Brotherhood" discuss the plan to enslave the world. However, guided by the fact that he has a vacation, Gary decides to sleep again and only the next morning he contacts Lucy's boss. Having received the assignment, the player together with Gary will have to explore the gloomy castle de la Bourbon, explore approaches to it, visit the parallel world and ultimately defeat the impending ancient evil.
