Galaxy on Fire 2 drops you into the pilot seat of Keith T. Maxwell thirty-five years after a hyperdrive malfunction stranded him in an unknown sector. Fishlabs released this space combat sim back in early 2009 for PC, Mac, and mobile devices. You wake up on a mining station orbiting Var Hastra only to find the galaxy has changed while you slept. New factions like the Mido Confederation have formed, and a terrifying alien force known as the Voids is attacking freighters everywhere. Your job involves repairing your ship, hunting pirates, and eventually confronting the void threat alongside old allies and new scientists. This sequel expands the scope significantly compared to its predecessor by offering a much larger universe to explore and fight within.
You spend most of your time flying a customized fighter craft through asteroid fields and around planets. The core loop involves accepting missions to escort convoys, mining resources from asteroids, or hunting down pirate ships in dogfights. You manage fuel levels and shield integrity while dodging laser fire and enemy torpedoes. Combat feels tight and responsive on mobile controls but offers full keyboard support on PC for precision aiming. Between battles you dock at stations to upgrade weapons, buy better engines, or sell your collected ore. The single-player campaign forces you to visit distant star systems where you uncover the mystery of the Voids while rebuilding your reputation with various alien races.
Players have given this title a solid Metacritic score of 76 out of 100, which suggests strong approval among critics and gamers alike. PlayPile data shows the average playtime hovers around forty hours for those chasing full completion. Community moods lean heavily toward nostalgia and satisfaction with the flight physics. Users frequently cite the achievement system as a major draw, with nearly sixty percent of players unlocking all available trophies. Review snippets often mention the satisfying upgrade progression and how the mobile version holds up surprisingly well against PC versions. Only about fifteen percent of players quit before finishing the main story, indicating high engagement rates throughout the campaign.
Galaxy on Fire 2 is worth your time if you enjoy space sims with a focus on ship customization and dogfighting rather than complex base management. The price point remains reasonable for the amount of content available across multiple platforms. You will spend roughly forty hours exploring the galaxy and unlocking all achievements if you stick with it. This game suits players who want a focused single-player experience without needing online multiplayer components. It is not perfect, but the flight mechanics and upgrade systems are detailed enough to keep you engaged for weeks.
The game follows the adventures of Keith T. Maxwell, as he is sent forwards in time after a malfunction with his hyperdrive, caused by damage from a skirmish in an asteroid belt. His craft, hurtling out of control with Keith unconscious, is put in an orbit around Var Hastra by the onboard flight computer, before being salvaged by an ore dealer and towed to the orbiting space station. The dealer, Gunant Breh, tells Keith of events that happened while Keith was unconscious, and Keith is stunned to realize that 35 years have passed since the incident in the asteroid belt. Breh then tasks Keith with collecting ore from an old mining ship. While mining, the ship comes under attack by pirates, and Keith flies back to the station. Unhappy with having to run away from the pirates, Keith convinces Gunant to help him take out the pirates in the area. After fighting off the pirates, Keith is told to visit a neighboring planet, as the space station there recently lost contact. While investigating, Keith comes across his old friend Mkkt Bkkt, who explains that the crew of the station have been infected with 'neuro-algae', and are subsequently intoxicated.
