Gang Wars is a two-player co-op beat 'em up set in a gritty New York City. You and a partner play as martial artists Mike and Jackie, fighting through waves of thugs in locations like Chinatown and Manhattan. Combat uses punch, kick, and jump buttons to string together combos, with optional firearms like an assault rifle and flamethrower. Each character has distinct moves, and a stat system lets you tweak Power, Speed, and Guard to build playstyles. The story follows their mission to stop the villain Jaguar, who’s kidnapped a friend and unleashed chaos. The game stands out for its hybrid mechanics, mixing hand-to-hand combat with ranged weapons in a genre that rarely blends both. While similar to Double Dragon in structure, it adds customization and brief cutscenes that set it apart. With points earned to upgrade stats and a co-op focus, it leans into arcade-style teamwork over solo brawling. Though not a modern classic, it carved a niche with its flexibility during its 1989 arcade run, later seeing ports to portable and console platforms.

Storyline

The setting takes place in New York City, following martial artists Mike and Jackie, who heard an evil gang led by the antagonist, Jaguar, are terrorizing the city. Jaguar also kidnapped a young woman name Cynthia. Players must help Mike and Jackie by struggling through parts of New York City (including Chinatown, Manhattan) defeating Jaguar's gang to return peace to New York City, and defeat Jaguar to save Cynthia.
