About Gears of War: Reloaded

Gears of War: Reloaded is a remastered edition of the 2006 third-person shooter that launched the Gears of War series. Developed by The Coalition and published by Xbox Game Studios, it hits PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S on August 26, 2025. The game retains the cover-based combat and claustrophobic hallway fights that defined the original but adds 4K visuals, 120 FPS support, and cross-play/multiplatform progression. It’s split into a single-player campaign, competitive multiplayer, co-op, and a split-screen mode that’s a direct lift from the 2006 version. If you want to see how the Gears formula evolved into a genre staple, this is the entry point.

Gameplay

Combat feels exactly like it did two decades ago but sharper. You pop behind cover, reload magazines mid-sprint, and blast Locust enemies with shotguns, Lancers, and grenades. The campaign is linear, with set-piece battles that force you to adapt to environmental hazards like swarms and brute hordes. Multiplayer retains the 120-player lobbies and modes like Team Deathmatch and Onslaught. Split-screen co-op is tight, with two players sharing a screen for campaigns or versus matches. The remaster doesn’t add new mechanics but polishes existing ones, animations are crisper, and the 120 FPS mode makes aiming feel snappier.

What Players Think

PlayPile members rate it 4.1/5, with 72% finishing the main story in 8, 12 hours. Critics from 2025 averaged 8.6/10, praising the “unwavering dedication to the original vision.” Multiplayer sees the most replay value: 34% of players log 20+ hours in ranked modes. Community moods are split, 45% call it a “nostalgia trip,” while 28% argue it’s too dated for newcomers. Achievements total 100, with 65% completion on average, though the “Reloading Legacy” trophy for 100% co-op is rare (only 12% claim it).

PlayPile's Take

This is a love letter to OG Gears fans, not a gateway for newcomers. With a $39.99 price tag and cross-play, it’s a solid buy if you want to relive the franchise’s roots. The campaign is short but punchy, and multiplayer still holds up. Skip it if you’re after innovation, Reloaded doesn’t modernize the formula, just sharpens it. The 100 achievements add longevity, but don’t expect anything impressive.
