GeGeGe no Kitaro 2: Yokai Gundan no Chousen is a turn-based RPG where you play as Kitaro, a yokai boy defending humans from monstrous spirits. The game tasks you with rescuing a kidnapped companion and halting a yokai invasion by navigating a map modeled after Japan. Battles unfold in discrete rounds where you select actions, then watch animations resolve the fight. Progression feels earned through tough early-game combat, surviving two monster encounters without leveling often means retreating to heal. XP gains start sparse, with most foes offering single-digit points, though the low thresholds for leveling let you climb steadily to a max of Level 10. The game’s challenge comes from its rigid difficulty curve and structured world. Spirit storms block access to regions until specific objectives are met, forcing a nonlinear path through towns, castles, and caves. While the simplified RPG mechanics lack depth, the localization of geography and yokai lore ties give it charm. Kitaro’s quest to recover stolen gear and rescue his girlfriend adds personal stakes to the otherwise stripped-down design.
Kitarou had left his weapons at home and was on a trip when the Tennyo appeared to him and told him that Japan had been taken over by youkai. Kitarou returns home, but finds his weapons and his father missing from his house, and his girlfriend Yumeko Tendo, who was supposed to be a bridge between Kitarou and the Tennyo, has also been kidnapped.
