GemVenture brings the match-three formula to the NES with a combat twist. You face off against various monsters by swapping adjacent gems to build mana. Matching three or more of the same color fuels your attacks, while heart and spike gems handle healing or dealing damage directly. Pressing Select lets you cast one of eighteen available spells once you have enough resources. The turn-based cycle continues until only one side remains standing. Between battles, you gain experience points to boost your stats before tackling the next challenge on the roster of twenty foes. The game stands out for packing six distinct character classes into a single cartridge. Tom Livak created this title as part of the 2009 PDRoms Coding Competition inspired by Puzzle Quest. Each class interacts with the spell system differently, changing how you approach every encounter. The combat loop feels tight on the limited hardware without needing complex graphics to work. It is a solid puzzle strategy experience that proves the NES can handle depth in turn-based battles.
