Gem'X is a puzzle game that asks you to match patterns by shifting colored tiles. You’re given two grids side by side and must transform the left grid to match the right. Each tile cycles through a fixed color sequence, red, green, blue, purple, yellow. Clicking a tile makes it jump two steps forward in the sequence while adjacent tiles shift one step. This creates a ripple effect where solving one part often messes up another. The challenge grows as levels add more tiles and tighter constraints. The game’s clever twist on color logic stands out. Instead of swapping tiles, you manipulate their properties using a strict progression system. While simplistic by today’s standards, its abstract puzzles and mechanical depth earned a cult following among retro puzzle fans. Released in 1990, it ran on platforms like the Amiga and C64, with a design that feels ahead of its time in some ways but limited by 16-bit hardware in others.
