Gensei Kitan: Disc Saga III is a 1995 RPG from Compile that casts you as Smash, a boisterous warrior from the Dog Tribe. You trek across a world mixing medieval fantasy and steam-powered gadgetry, chatting with townsfolk and clashing with enemies in grid-based battles viewed from the side. Each fight lets you spend TP to unleash character-specific techniques or cast spells. Along the way Smash gathers allies like Kiri, a guitarist from the Fox Tribe, to help track down a stolen treasure guarded by rival animal clans. The game’s charm lies in its quirky setting, where clockwork contraptions sit alongside castles, and its focus on team composition during battles. Though it never got a Western release, it’s remembered by retro RPG fans for its snappy dialogue and escalating combat stakes. The PC-9800 visuals hold up as charmingly pixelated, and the blend of tribal politics with occult threats gives the plot some unexpected depth. It’s a relic of early 90s JRPG experimentation.
