About

Genso Suikogaiden Volume 1 follows Nash, a lone agent tasked with tracking a mysterious artifact in the Suikoden universe. Played as a visual novel, the story unfolds through dialogue and branching choices as Nash navigates political tensions and uncovers secrets. His journey intersects with Sierra, a cryptic ally whose motives remain unclear. The narrative balances intrigue with character-driven moments, though combat is absent in favor of dialogue-based progression. The game stands out for its tight storytelling and ties to Suikoden lore, offering depth for series veterans while remaining accessible. With minimal combat and a focus on mystery, it prioritizes atmosphere over action. Though its 2000 release date and niche format limit modern exposure, fans of tactical RPGs often revisit it for its lore expansions. Shorter than mainline Suikoden entries, it feels more like an extended prequel than a standalone adventure.

Storyline

The game begins mid-journey with Nash Latkje, a Harmonian agent searching for information on True Runes, escorting Sierra Mikain to Muse. As of the beginning of the game, they are about two days distance away from the city itself. Though unhappy with Sierra's self-centred behaviour and disliking having any company at all, believing the work of a spy to be lonely and alone by nature, Nash has little choice but to take Sierra as Sierra is Nash's only lead as to the nature/presence of True Runes, Nash's assignment from the Harmonian Southern Frontier Defense Force. Along the way, Nash and Sierra meet a Kobold family. The Kobold children fight over a wooden figurine, and it falls in front of Sierra. Sierra demands that Nash throw it back quickly; he does so. The Kobold family thanks the two and drive away.
