About

Giga Wing is a 1999 arcade shooter with co-op play developed by Takumi Corporation and released on CPS-2 and Dreamcast. Players control one of four pilots in a steampunk war setting, navigating vertical scrolling levels to dismantle a powerful medallion fueling conflict. Boss battles center around the medallion’s corrupting influence, with encounters escalating toward a climactic showdown against the Stranger, a shadowy antagonist tied to both the game’s fictional war and real-world historical conflicts. Team modes let two players tackle levels together, altering narrative outcomes and survival rates based on coordination and choices. The game’s branching storylines and dual endings for each character add replayability, with co-op runs introducing unpredictable shifts in plot resolution. Its mechanical simplicity, tight shooting loops and aggressive boss design, pairs with a surprisingly layered narrative, linking its 1990s arcade roots to broader historical themes. Community discussions often highlight the Stranger’s eerie WWII parallels and the emotional weight of sacrifice-driven endings, though its dated visuals may not sway modern audiences. Short, punchy runs make it easy to pick up, but the web of interconnected stories keeps deeper exploration rewarding.

Storyline

Giga Wing takes place during a fictional war within a steampunk setting. The game is based on the player(s) trying to destroy a medallion which possesses great power. Many of the bosses use the medallion as a weapon. At the end, it shows that an evil man who pilots a ship called the "Stranger" is the real person who is in control of the Medallion, and was responsible for the war, as well as other conflicts in the past including World War II, and you fight him three times as a mini-boss and as the last boss. He appears to be a friend of Stuck 30 years ago when you fight him with Stuck. There are four different characters in the game: Sinnosuke, Ruby, Isha, and Stuck; and each of them has their own individual storyline. Players can also do team play mode that has two characters at once, creating a new storyline. In each storyline, there are two endings. In the bad ending, the character the player uses will sacrifice their life in a kamikaze attack that destroys the Medallion. In team up mode, generally one of the character does this, but sometimes both characters survive. In the good endings for either solo or team play, the characters do not sacrifice themselves.
