Glitch is a 2D platform MMO built for web browsers that skips combat entirely in favor of building and exploration. Players work together to complete quests that reshape a shared world through activities like planting forests, cooking meals, and crafting objects. Progress isn’t about defeating enemies but altering the environment, your actions directly influence the land and its ecosystems. The game’s design prioritizes creativity over competition, encouraging groups to expand the map and nurture resources over time. Tiny Speck released Glitch in 2011 but returned it to beta soon after, citing balancing problems. It closed permanently in late 2012 after just over a year. While the project aimed for a player-driven world, its lack of conflict and shallow progression failed to retain many users. Still, its focus on collaboration and environmental impact made it a brief but distinct experiment in non-traditional MMO design.
