About

This 1993 Game Boy RPG casts three ordinary RPG fans as accidental heroes after a demon attacks a shuttered game studio. Given the souls of fallen warriors, they enter a fantasy world to rescue its realm and prevent the demon from invading reality. Combat revolves around turn-based battles where characters level up, swap gear, and learn spells. The core mechanic is the Maphu system: collect colored gems, slot them into weapons, and unleash element-based attacks. Charging these abilities during fights builds power that carries over between encounters. Saves are available at any time except during battles. The Fukkoku-ban version adds a monster bestiary and Super Game Boy support, improving its 1993 original. The Maphu gem system stands out for its flexibility, different characters trigger unique effects from the same gem, encouraging builds tailored to playstyle. While its 8-bit visuals and clunky dialogue feel dated, the core loop of grinding levels and experimenting with gear combinations has held up. A niche title for retro RPG fans, it remains a curious relic of early 90s handheld gaming.
